Mar Gewargis Sunday School

In 1980, the newly consecrated Mar Gewargis Cathedral located in Chicago, Illinois, implemented its first Sunday School program. Under the edict of His Holiness, the late Mar Dinkha Catholicos Patriarch of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, this program flourished and still remains today. With over 380 participating students and their numerous volunteers, Sunday School is held each week preceding Sunday morning mass inside the first floor of the Cathedral.

The goal of Sunday School is to help guide our younger generation into following the same footsteps of faith, language, biblical knowledge, traditions and culture, as our ancestors followed. Sunday School consists of a two-part education program that includes both language learning classes as well bible study. Regardless of whether or not the child was born in our homeland or in America, the goal of language learning is to teach children how to speak, understand, write and read in our native tongue. Sunday School also teaches bible study along with the unique beliefs of The Church of the East and what makes our church different from others. We see the reward and hard work payoff as these young children more often than not grow up to be knowledgeable clergymen, choir members who read prayers written in the Assyrian language, and all in all, avid parishioners. Mar Gewargis’ Sunday School has helped instill faith and tradition in the lives of young children growing up in America.

Over three decades, the efforts of countless volunteers that have helped shape the lives of our youth through Sunday School have never gone unnoticed. We have been honored to receive the time and dedication from these talented individuals that have made our Sunday School program what it is today. We give thanks and acknowledgement to the names of volunteers listed below, including those who have passed on to eternal life and to those who still remain with us today.
