The summer of 2001 marked the humble beginning of our beloved St. Andrews Parish. On July 17th, 2001 a small group of faithful from the Northwest suburbs met with Reverend Dr. Gewargis Toma to discuss spiritual matters. The main focus was to get closer to our Lord Jesus Christ and learn how to grow spiritually as Christians. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone, who believes (Romans 1:16).” The next direction was clearly the establishment of Bible studies for both adults and youth.

Bible studies were initially held in the homes of parishioners. “And they continued steadfastly in the Apostle’s doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayer (Acts 2:42).” As time passed, it was evident that a larger venue was needed to facilitate the Bible studies. The Mount prospect community center was home for these studies for two months. The following three weeks Bible studies were then held at the Des Plaines community center. “Now those who believed were one heart and one soul (Acts 4:32).”

Finding a home for Bible studies was never a challenge. The Apollo School in Des Plaines became yet another path in the continued growth of this towards the spiritual dream. The Bible study and Assyrian language meetings were held on Thursday’s.

The first Holy Mass was held on October 7th, 2001 “And the believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitude of both men and women (Acts 5:14.”

On December 25, 2001, the first Christmas mass was celebrated at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines. St Andrews Parish has experienced tremendous blessings from the good Lord through the generosity of Maryville Academy, who offered a home for our congregation.

St Andrews remains faithful to its mission to help, care, and serve the faithful, and we pray that our Lord Jesus Christ would be glorified, and the mighty arms of our Heavenly Father would surround St. Andrew’s congregation and touch the hearts and souls of every induvial, amen.
